How do I lose weight? Easily the most common question I get asked!
Usually when people ask me this they do it with a pretty despondent tone, because they’ve tried loads of things before and nothing has worked for very long.
I can see why people get to the point where they think they just don’t know how to do it. When this thought comes on a background of one failure after another there’s a tendency to have the perception that it’s impossible for you. This is a frustrating place to be because it creates the mind-set of being STUCK.
If that’s you have a go at forgetting the ‘how to’ when it comes to losing your weight. If you really knew how to do it you’d have probably done it by now anyway.
When your mind asks a ‘how to’ question and you don’t know the answer there’s sometimes a tendency for your mind to close and think there isn’t an answer, and therefore it’s impossible.
If you feel like you’re doing that when you ask “how do I lose weight?” have a go at asking a different question like “what if I lost all this weight…?”
Asking something like that gets you to think about what it would actually be like, and it also opens up the possibility in your mind that it is possible (because of course it is). Your mind makes a subtle but significant shift towards the possibility of weight loss, which is important because in this state you feel more resourceful and open to new things.
Being open to new things is exactly where you need to look, because the old stuff isn’t working.
Successful weight loss is much more a mind thing than a doing thing.
How Do I Lose Weight
If you feel stuck and find yourself keep asking “how do I lose weight?”, ask different questions of yourself:
- What would it be like to lose this weight?
- What will it be like to be x stone lighter?
- What would it be like to feel slim, healthy and full of energy?
Notice how the feeling is different with questions like this. Become open to the fact than you don’t know everything you need to know yet to lose your weight.

Thanks Dr. Julie, I love how the questions can also be applied to other areas of my life. It feels much easier when you put weight loss into this perspective. Knowing where I am going rather than feeling stuck.
Hi Alan, so glad you enjoyed this blog.
Thank you for the feedback, you take care.
