You might be surprised to find out that one of the most important factors dictating both the quality and quantity of your sleep is related to what you eat. If you want to know how to get to sleep you may need to look at what you are eating.
One of the first questions I ask people who complain of insomnia is what they eat on a regular basis. Among other things I want to get an idea of how much sugar and refined carbs they eat on an average day.
What you eat influences the balance of hormones and chemical messengers in your body.
Eating foods like refined carbs and sugar has a number of bad effects on the hormones of your body. One of these is an excessive amount of a hormone called cortisol. This is a stress hormone released from your adrenal glands (they sit on top of your kidneys).
Cortisol should be low at night, but if you have been eating sugar and refined carbs through the day, chances are it will be high instead.
Can’t sleep
Higher than normal levels of cortisol at night has the effect of you lying wide awake at night, you might feel agitated too for no apparent reason.
How to get to sleep
Cutting out refined carbs will gradually return your cortisol levels to normal, but this can take a couple of weeks so it’s something you need to stick with to get the results you want.
This is just one way that diet choices can mess up your sleep pattern.

Uber Health to you
Julie 🙂
Good morning Julie – I have problems with my sleep and was looking forward to reading your e-book. I tried to download this morning, but Amazon says we cannot download through amazon.uk. Apparently in the US we only have amazon. Is there any other way to get your e-book?
Hi Cindy. I’m not very technical I must admit. I’m not sure I understand your question but I assume you are in the US and usually use Amazon.com when you buy stuff?
If I am understanding you correctly – go onto Amazon.com and put Julie Coffey in the search at the top – that will bring the book up and if your usual account is on the US site you’ll be able to get it from there – do it really soon while it’s still free.
Let me know if you have any problems, or if I’ve got this all wrong and haven’t answered your question.
This is a learning point for me so thanks. I’ve obviously put the UK link in for Amazon which is not much use to people who aren’t in the UK!
Thx Julie you answered my questions exactly right and it worked……woohoo!!!! Looking forward to reading it. Thx again
Oh great! And you are very welcome. Enjoy the book 🙂
Thanks for the book. It’s helping me sleep better already!
