What’s Your Resistance To Weight Loss?

If you’re not losing your weight, but you’re saying you want to – what’s stopping you? What’s your resistance to weight loss?

There’s going to be some resistance to weight loss in your head somewhere that’s stopping you making the changes you need to make to lose your weight – and that shows itself in the things you say and do.

How many of these common ones can you spot in yourself?

Impatience

Impatience over losing your weight or doing diets that promise loads of weight loss in a ridiculously short space of time is your resistance to weight loss showing itself. If you’re wanting the result fast you’re basically not ready to do the necessaries like learn how to actually change.

If you decide to go holiday you know there are quite of lot of steps to take to get there. Just sitting at home demanding to get there in no time at all isn’t going to get you there any quicker. But when it comes to weight loss we just want the problem over and done with, but we don’t want to do what needs to be done – change.

Delaying Tactics

Delaying tactics are absolute classic resistance to weight loss behaviour:

  • I’ll start after my holidays
  • I’ve got too many other things on right now
  • I don’t have the time
  • I’ll start Monday
  • I’ll wait for the New Year

How many times have you eased your conscience with these?

Fear

Resistance comes out as fear too:

  • I’m not ready yet
  • I might fail and then I’ll be disappointed
  • I’ll waste my money if it doesn’t work
  • What will other people think if I try this and don’t lose weight?

All of these will stop you ever making a real start that you’re committed to seeing through.

Making Assumptions

What about making assumptions about things that you don’t actually know too much about because you haven’t tired them? You might have said “Weight loss coaching wouldn’t work for me” – yet you’ve never had even one session with a coach.

Or another assumption – “It will work itself out in the end”. But without actually doing anything different what on earth is going to change?

Your Actions

What are your actions when the subject of weight loss and health are brought up? Do you change the subject because you’re uncomfortable to talk about it, feeling that all focus is on you? Do you even leave the room?

Maybe you get defensive and cite numerous reasons why it’s difficult/impossible for you to lose your weight:

  • It’s genetic
  • I’ve got a thyroid problem
  • I can’t exercise because of a, b, c …. x, y, z

What’s Your Resistance To Weight Loss?

How many of these have struck a chord with you?

What’s your resistance to weight loss?

If you say you want to lose weight but it’s not happening – something is holding you back.

How many times have you had a massive blow out with food or fallen off the health waggon and said something like “I won’t do that again!”, beat yourself up about it, and then do exactly the same thing a short time later?

This kind of thing is nothing to do with will power, but everything to do with your often hidden resistance to weight loss.

To lose your weight you need to uncover that resistance, and when you do that it’s like taking the handbrake off – all of a sudden you can move forward.

Sometimes you need help to find out what’s holding you back, sometimes you know but don’t know what to do about it. That’s where working with someone one to one can really help.
